“The sun is streaming into the window blinds
Sharp
The baby is in the next room lecturing Kermit
on the advantages of getting adequate sleep
I check my phone
8:30 a.m.
My eyes blurry and crusty from sleeping in contacts
… again
I remind myself that I could go blind
then think to myself that, that might be okay
Two Snapchat notifications and a text message
I try to convince myself that today will be the day
But I am reminded of why I stay
She’s giggling in the next room and telling Kermit,
“Sleep is good for you, close your eyes and go night-night. Okay?”
I get out of bed–
rubbing my eyes
Stand in front of my dirty bathroom sink and
begin to start my life.”
